Cyclists targeted by assailant suspected of deliberately pouring oil over bike paths

INNER city bike riders have been spun out by a cyclist-hating assailant suspected of deliberately pouring oil over city bike paths, causing crashes and injuries to riders.

Road rules for cyclists

A CYCLIST-hating assailant is suspected of deliberately pouring oil over city bike paths and causing riders to crash.

The Capital City Trail, especially between Dynon and Arden roads, has been targeted around half a dozen times over the past three weeks.

It’s feared there may be more attacks which haven’t been reported.

The latest occurred overnight.

Leading Sen-Constable Rueben Larson said the slippery black substance — possibly diesel oil — could cause a catastrophic crash.

“It’s of very serious concern,” Leading Sen-Constable Larson said.

“Coming off a bicycle at high speed can lead to some serious injuries.

“We have concerns that there may be further incidents which could result in further people sustaining injuries or being hospitalised as a result.”

Police are yet to speak with any cyclists caught up in the attacks but are appealing for a woman who it’s understood suffered facial injuries after crashing her bike to come forward.

Leading Sen-Constable Larson said the culprit could face serious charges such as conduct endangering another person.

Police are seeking CCTV from the local council to assist with investigations.

“Unfortunately we’re not sure who this person is or what their motivation is,” he said.

“It’s quite a tight corner where this is being done in particular and it’s also right by the river.

“There is a barrier and concrete pylons right by so it can be quite a nasty spill if someone was to come off their bicycle.

“Someone could end up in the river or crashing into one of the concrete pillars there which could result in some serious injuries.

“We’re still trying to find out the motivations but given where it is we do believe it’s a deliberate act.”

Bicycle Network chief executive officer Craig Richards said: “These incidents seem like a hard-to-fathom cry for attention”

“We ask that bike riders always pay attention and take care. Do not overreact publicly to these incidents, and give these people the satisfaction they seek,” Mr Richards said.

“If you do come across any hazards the best thing to do is contact the authorities. Suspicious activity should be reported to the police.”

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area is urged to contact Crime Stoppers via 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.gov.au.

Victims should phone Melbourne North Police Station on (03) 8379 0800.
