Herald Sun: We're for you

A MAJOR security breach at Melbourne’s children’s court has sparked alarm among senior government and court officials.

In the midst of Melbourne’s youth crime scourge the Herald Sun can reveal the court was recently burgled with concern sensitive data may have been stolen.

The Herald Sun understands staff security passes and cash were stolen when the Little Lonsdale St court building was burgled in January.

Sources have revealed the break-in has caused concern among senior court officials and staff issued with new security passes to the building.

But court officials would not comment on what was stolen when asked.

No arrests have been made following the January 8 burglary.

Police believe a male offender gained entry to the building about 1.45am.

Once inside, the man rummaged through staff drawers and left the building with an amount of money, they say.

He is perceived to be of caucasian appearance with a thin build and was wearing a blue zip-up hooded jacket, grey track pants and grey sneakers.

Police have released an image and CCTV footage of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.

Court Services Victoria spokeswoman Jenni Coadi would not answer specific questions regarding the break-in.

“The break-in is being investigated by Victoria Police, and as such no further comment will be made,” she said.

“The security of court premises is of paramount concern to CSV, and we will continue to take action in the interests of the safety and security of all court users.”

Shadow Attorney-General John Pesutto said the break-in was evidence Victorian crime was out of control.

“This break-in at one of our courts tells us the law and order crisis gripping Victoria is not only real, but reaching new levels of brazenness and disrespect,” Mr Pesutto said.

“In the interests of public confidence, details should be released about this break-in, including how did it occur, were confidential records or security details taken, and was any damage caused, although sensitive information should be redacted.”

A spokeswoman for Attorney-General Martin Pakula said it would be inappropriate to comment as the matter was still under investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at crimestoppersvic.com.au
