A TODDLER remains in a serious condition after she was hit by a reversing car in the driveway of an Avondale Heights home last night.

The vehicle was reversing out of a Riverside Avenue driveway just after 8pm when the two-year-old was struck.

She was rushed to the Royal Children’s Hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.

Witnesses in Riverside Avenue told the Herald Sun the child’s mother had been driving the car and was beside herself with grief.

One neighbour reportedly said the mother screamed “What have I done? She’s so young” after accidentally hitting her child.

One man, who did not want to give his name, said the toddler’s frantic father raised the alarm, bashing on doors and asking for them to call for help.

He said a group of neighbours, including another man who was a doctor, raced to help the girl as the parents consoled each other on the nature strip.

“We called an ambulance, came outside and the daughter was bleeding,” the man said.

“The girl was there and everyone was around her; the mum and the dad were here and the mum was laying on the ground screaming, like, ‘what have I done?’ She’s so young’.”

A woman was last night assisting police with their inquiries.
