A NEW police unit responsible for drug busting has seized 150 cannabis plants from a house in Victoria’s north.

Detectives from the new Eastern Region Division Tasking Unit on Wednesday raided two homes in Numurkah, 37km north of Shepparton.

A 24-year-old Vietnamese national was arrested at an address on McGregor St, where police found the cannabis plants.

He was charged with cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of drugs and other drug related offences.

The recently established unit will cover an area from Cobram to Mt Hotham and is focused on drug trafficking and related offences.

Detective Inspector Joy Arbuthnot encouraged the community to report suspicious behaviour. She said police would take action.

“Police have zero tolerance for drug traffickers who peddle harmful substances in our community,” she said.

“All drug use starts somewhere, be it at home, at social events or through association, which is why police work tirelessly to reduce the supply of drugs in Victoria.”

The offender was remanded in custody and will appear at the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on May 7.
