What happens in a criminal trial?

THE former partner of Brynne Edelsten threatened to send allegedly incriminating videos of the reality star to the media if she did not withdraw charges against him, a court has heard.

Cemre Volkan, 25, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where he pleaded not guilty to 11 charges, including perverting the course of justice, stalking and assaulting Ms Edelsten.

Mr Volkan — who also goes by the name Red — is accused of pushing Ms Edelsten from behind on March 27 last year, causing her to injure her toe.

The Herald Sun is unable to detail the alleged activity in the videos or outline the contents of text messages sent between the feuding couple on the order of the court.

Mr Volkan was already facing assault charges over another incident involving Ms Edelsten a month earlier when he allegedly threatened to expose her to the media.

Ms Edelsten hooked up with Mr Volkan only months after the breakdown of her marriage to entrepreneur Geoffrey Edelsten in January 2014.

The court heard the 33-year old was forced to seek legal advice about potentially incriminating herself before appearing via videolink to give evidence against Mr Volkan.

The Herald Sun does not suggest Ms Edelsten has committed any crime.

She told the court the couple had a “rollercoaster” relationship, which continued for almost a year after their public breakup in August 2015.

“It was fire and ice. It was up and down … it was very good, then very bad,” she said.

The court heard the pair would often have explosive arguments that resulted in them exchanging hurtful and rude text messages.

Ms Edelsten was grilled by Mr Volkan’s barrister, Daniel Sala, who suggested she once put a knife to her arm and threatened self-harm while with Mr Volkan.

Ms Edelsten told the court the relationship ended shortly before she became aware Mr Volkan had approached Woman’s Day with a story about her in May last year.

Ms Edelsten said she feared he would provide the potentially damaging video of herself to Woman’s Day and reported him to police.

“It left me living in fear of it … I was terrified,” she said. “He would constantly hold it over my head.”

Crown prosecutor Peter Rose, QC, alleged Mr Volkan had two motives for leaking the video — profit or having the charges dropped.

Mr Sala said there was no evidence his client tried to give the video to the media.

Mr Volkan will reappear in court for a directions hearing on Friday.
