Footy fans fight in East Melbourne

THREE men have been charged following a brutal alleged assault on two footy patrons in East Melbourne early Friday morning.

A 27-year-old and 24-year-old, both from Fitzroy North, and a 27-year-old East Melbourne man were all charged overnight with intentionally cause injury, recklessly cause injury and other assault-related offences.

The trio were bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on December 4.

Two of the men were arrested in Fitzroy North on Friday night and the third presented to Richmond police station.

It comes as the Victims of Crimes Commissioner calls for lifetime footy bans over the ugly incident, which followed a clash at the MCG.

Greg Davies called on the AFL to permanent match bans to those responsible for the “grotesque” beating following Thursday night’s Richmond and Hawthorn match.

Mr Davies said they must face the “most severe ramifications the legal and justice system can bring to bear.”

He said if found guilty the alleged attackers should be banned: “I’d like to see the AFL ban them from going to the football for life.”

Graphic footage shows two men punching a 61-year-old patron in the head 17 times and stomping on him.

His mate, 45, from Mount Waverley, was seen backing away with his hands up apparently in surrender before being knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched.

The gruesome incident unfolded after midnight on Wellington Parade.

Both men are recovering in The Alfred hospital.

The 61-year-old, a dad from Rosebud, has serious facial fractures and head injuries.

His mate from Mount Evelyn may require surgery for a broken arm and has facial injuries.

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Ashlee Bull said the incident lasted a full minute before the alleged assailants were seen “casually walking away”.

It’s believed the incident unfolded after an argument while waiting for a cab outside the Pullman Hotel.

Police will allege the pair ran for safety and hid.

They later returned to the taxi rank where they were allegedly ambushed.

“They are very shaken up and upset by what’s happened,” said DSC Bull.

.

Their head injuries are so severe they have been unable to tell investigators what happened.

Both parties had consumed alcohol earlier in the night.

Mr Davies, a former police officer, said the Australian culture appeared to have changed for the worse.

“It’s alien to anyone over the age of 40. If one of their mates kicked someone in a fight, they’d be wiped like a runny nose. Nowadays, it seems to be de rigueur.”

The trio split up after the attack and were last seen walking in opposite directions along Wellington Parade.

Richmond Football Club refused to comment.
