AFL crowd violence crisis

AN UGLY brawl erupted outside a topless bar near the MCG, just hours after yesterday’s AFL clash between Collingwood and Melbourne, with a man taken to hospital.

At least 10 men believed to be football fans were involved in the fracas at the Royal Hotel on Punt Rd last night just hours after 83,000 people watched the big game.

Pub owner Adrian said he hoped the injured man recovered.

“The first thing we noticed was our security running out and then the ambulance pulled up just outside (the corner entrance),” he said.

“We honestly don’t know whether (the men involved) were customers or whether they came up from (a nearby pub).”

Emergency services arrived at 8.20pm to reports of a fight and one man was taken to The Alfred hospital with upper body injuries.

A neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, said she was sick and tired of footy fans causing trouble on Punt Rd.

“I didn’t even notice it last night and that goes to show how often this sort of thing happens — we’re almost used to it,” she said.

Paramedics also treated another man at the scene.

Police are investigating the fight and no arrests have been made.

The Royal Hotel bills itself as “Melbourne’s oldest and only public bar with topless barmaids”.

It is believed the men involved in the brawl were football supporters who had been to the Queen’s Birthday clash, won by Collingwood.

The fight was among several violent incidents linked to the game.

A 31-year-old Richmond man was pulled from his bike and bashed by two men at the concourse outside gates 2 and 3 at about 6pm.

His attackers fled when bystanders stepped in to help and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police booted six people from the MCG during the game, including one person for assault.

Two drunks and three rowdy fans were also evicted.

Anyone with information the brawl is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
