A NEW mum had been breast feeding her baby just minutes before she was struck down in the Bourke St rampage.

Nethra Krishnamurthy had been fighting for life in The Alfred hospital’s intensive care unit after suffering horrific injuries in Friday’s city tragedy.

But her husband, Mohan Kumar, who had kept a 24/7 bedside vigil, was relieved she finally woke from a coma today.

Ms Krishnamurthy had only returned from maternity leave to her IT support job at Mexia Consulting in the city in the days before last week’s attack.

She visited her eight-month-old baby boy at a nearby daycare to feed him and was walking back to her Bourke St office when she was mowed down.

Mexia director Mathew Coleman said Ms Krishnamurthy was well-loved by her colleagues, who had rallied around to support her husband and son.

“She had worked with us for a couple of years and everyone has been doing everything they can to support Mohan,” Mr Coleman said.

“They don’t have any family in Australia, which makes it really tough.

“So we’ve had people offering to cook meals, do shopping for them, and one colleague is looking after the baby so Mohan can be at the hospital.”

Mr Coleman said he visited Mohan at the hospital on Saturday and he was “still in shock”.

Ms Krishnamurthy initially underwent emergency surgery after sustaining serious injuries, including deep lacerations to her head, a punctured lung, damage to her liver and kidneys, as well as broken ribs and fractures to her spine.

“We expect her to have a long road to recovery,” Mr Coleman said.

Her work colleagues have set up an online fundraiser to help the family.

“All funds raised will go directly to Nethra and her husband,” he said.
