The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard Leigh had two young children and no prior criminal history.
He was remanded in custody after the brief hearing before Magistrate John Doherty and the matter is due back before court today.
Neighbours had expressed shock over Mr Recourt’s death, describing him as a “very kind gentleman” who was often seen walking his dog.
“He was a gentleman. A few years back I had a car accident out the front of his place and he was very kind to me,” a neighbour said.
“Most fellas would have called me a stupid woman to do that but he was kind.
“He was a big man. If you saw him you wouldn’t think he would be so kind.
“It’s very sad this has happened. He lived there for a while.”
