A BIKIE with international links is a suspect in one of Victoria’s most brutal murders.
And a veteran Geelong criminal with a reputation for extreme violence and ruthlessness is also believed to have been part of the cold case killing of Spirit of Tasmania security guard Earl Mooring.
The investigation into the death of Mr Mooring remains active, 16 years after he was savagely bludgeoned to death.
The killers were looking for a $120,000 nest egg Mr Mooring had tucked away for retirement when he suffered a horrific torture ordeal.
Fear of recriminations have prevented those who can help investigators from coming forward.
The men, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have never been cleared of involvement in the father-of-four’s murder.
The Bandido bikie has a well-earned reputation for brutality and is regarded as one of the more influential figures in Queensland’s outlaw motorcycle gang scene.
He has been linked to high-end drug trafficking and standover crimes.
The bikie is suspected of having used Mr Mooring’s credit card in a spending spree as he returned to the north.
The Geelong suspect has long been a figure of interest to police.
He has strong links to outlaw motorcycle gangs and the drug trade and was, at one stage, suspected of involvement in a contract killing.
Mr Mooring had been keeping $120,000 at his Norlane home, although there are suggestions those who came for it believed there was more than $300,000.
He was bashed with a hammer, tied up in a tarpaulin, then driven from the scene in his own car, a Nissan coupe.
His ATM card was used seven times in subsequent days along the east coast.
Police found his body much later in southern New South Wales after ex-Bandido Steve Utah took them to the scene.
There is a $500,000 reward in place to catch those responsible for Mr Mooring’s death.
