A PRISONER has been rushed to hospital after he was viciously bashed in a targeted attack inside maximum security Barwon Prison.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said paramedics arrived at the Lara prison to reports of an assault about 10.15am.

The inmate was taken to Geelong hospital in a serious but stable condition with injuries to his head and upper body.

A prison source told the Sunday Herald Sun up to four inmates were seen inside a prison cell, allegedly planning, just minutes before the attack.

It’s understood prison officers discovered a shiv shortly after the assault.

One of the alleged assailants, in jail for stabbing a man to death in 2003, is believed to have started a brawl with the victim.

Prison staff have since moved four inmates into high security units.

No staff were injured in the attack.

Corrections Victoria spokeswoman Kim Armstrong said the investigation has been handed over to police.
