A MELBOURNE man has appeared in court on gun charges that have been linked to the Brighton terror attack.

Kane Dalrymple, who is understood to have no connection to Islamic State or terrorism, appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court charged with four offences including trading guns without a licence.

Defence lawyer Felix Ralph claimed Dalrymple would be at risk in the prison system because of his alleged link to the Brighton murderer Yacqub Khayre.

But after a challenge from the Sunday Herald Sun, he failed to have his client Mr. Dalrymple’s identity suppressed.

“There is no ideological link or allegation or connection or evidence of connection to radical Islam,” Mr Ralph said.

“I have protective concerns about how others in the prison population are likely to view him ... in terms of him being attached to such an emotive incident.”

Magistrate Robert Kumar rejected the suppression application, noting Mr Dalrymple’s case was like any other that comes before the courts.

The court heard the prosecution case relies heavily on SMS message in which guns were referred to in coded words such as “bicycles”.

Mr Dalrymple did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to reappear on July 25.
