A KEY figure in the Essendon Football Club drugs scandal was arrested at Melbourne Airport last week.
Biochemist Shane Charter, who has turned star witness for the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority probe into the Essendon Football Club’s 2012 supplement program, was arrested by detectives examining the importation and supply of peptides.
Detectives from the Victoria Police Purana taskforce took Charter to the St Kilda Rd headquarters for questioning.
He was released without charge.
A Victoria police spokesman said the taskforce had arrested a 45-year-old Sunbury man at Tullamarine Airport on May 28 for “drug related offences” and released pending further inquiries.
“The investigation is ongoing so it would be inappropriate to comment any further.”
Charter had previously told the Herald Sun he sourced peptides for controversial sports scientist Stephen Dank.
As an annexure to the governance charges against Essendon, the AFL released a 34-point document that refers to a series of text and email exchanges between Dank and Charter, as well as emailed instructions from Charter to compounding pharmacist Nima Alavi and Dank on how to prepare and use thymosin.
A female answered Charter’s phone on Friday night and said she had no idea when he had been arrested.
