AFP officer dies in non-suspicious Melbourne shooting

AUSTRALIA’s head of federal police has revealed his “great sadness” at the fatal non-suspicious shooting of an agent at its Melbourne’s headquarters.

UPDATE: AFP OFFICER IDENTIFIED AS FORMER SAINT

Colleagues found the male officer at the force’s La Trobe St base at about 9am.

He died at the scene.

AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin said in a statement the organisation had been left shaken.

A female agent died in a non-suspicious shooting at the same building just eight months ago.

“It is with great sadness I can confirm one of our police officers has died in Melbourne today as a result of a gunshot wound,’’ Mr Colvin said.

“The circumstances around this tragic incident are being investigated by Victoria Police, who will prepare a report for the coroner.

“Our colleague’s death is not believed to be suspicious.

“My thoughts are with his loved ones and the broader AFP family.”

Mr Colvin, Deputy Commissioner Mike Phelan, Assistant Commissioner Frank Prendergast, the AFP’s Melbourne management team and welfare officers would provide “whatever support we can” for the officer’s family and our colleagues.

“It is not possible to put into words the grief and acute impact today’s loss will have on all within our close-knit AFP family,’’ Mr Colvin said.

“Out of respect for the family, friends, and the coronial process, we will not be providing any further comments.”

The incident remains under investigation.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Lauren Kells said: “Victoria Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of a person in Melbourne’s CBD this morning.”

“The person received a gunshot wound while in a Latrobe Street building and died at the scene about 9am,’’ she said.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.”
