Sordid details of former AFL star Nick Stevens’ infidelity are set to be exposed in court as he stands trial for perjury.

Stevens has pleaded not guilty in the County Court to having given false evidence while fighting allegations he assaulted his former partner Laima McKenna in 2014.

The jury heard the assault occurred when Ms McKenna confronted him about an affair with a woman named Samantha Nash.

The ex-Carlton player is accused of lying when he told the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on December 12, 2014, that he had never met a Samantha Nash.

But prosecutor Andrew Sim said phone records would show Stevens and Ms Nash sent more than 600 text messages to each other in September 2012 alone.

The jury heard Ms McKenna received a Facebook message from Ms Nash in December 2012 telling her that Stevens had invited her to his house and pressured her into seeing him.

Recordings and transcripts of the 2014 Ringwood hearing as well as messages that were “sexual in nature” between Stevens and Ms Nash would form part of the prosecution’s case, Mr Sim said.

A screenshot from an explicit video of Stevens performing a lewd act over a photo of Ms Nash was also shown to the court.

But defence barrister Jason Gullaci said the jury must consider whether Stevens thought Ms Nash “was a real and genuine person at that time”.

“It is absolutely in issue whether Mr Stevens ever met this Samantha Nash face-to-face,” Mr Gullaci said, adding Stevens had told the magistrate he thought Samantha Nash might have been an alias.

“(Ms Nash’s) credibility and reliability is in issue,” he said.

Mr Gullaci said the details set to be revealed during the trial were embarrassing and were likely to cast Stevens in a bad light.

“You’re going to hear about domestic violence … you’re going to hear about him cheating on his partner,” he said.

Mr Gullaci said the jury must consider Stevens’ evidence to the magistrate in the context of his two days in the witness box, not just the 30 seconds the prosecution was focused on.

Stevens was convicted and sentenced in 2014 of assaulting Ms McKenna, the jury heard.

Ms McKenna and Ms Nash will both be called as witnesses tomorrow.
