Adem Arpaci, 23, was whacked with the lengthy sentence on Friday by County Court Judge Frances Hogan, who said a message needed to be sent that road racing was “ridiculously unsafe”.
Arpaci caused the deaths of Harley Churchill, 19, and girlfriend Ivana Clonaridis, 18, who died in a fireball on the Western Ring Rd in the early hours of January 27, 2016.
Arpaci and Mr Churchill were seen by multiple witnesses driving at high speeds, weaving in and out of traffic.
Arpaci — who did not have any history of dangerous driving — aided the teenager into the deadly race after attending a series of illegal burnout gatherings in Melbourne’s north.
He later told police he had “adrenaline” pumping through his system before he and Mr Churchill raced at speeds of up to 180kmh.
Arpaci pleaded not guilty and Judge Hogan said he had downplayed his role in the tragedy. He must serve at least nine and half years before being eligible for parole.
