COMEDIAN and actor Rebel Wilson is suing Women’s Day over an article titled, “Just who is the REAL Rebel?”.
Wilson says the article published by the Bauer Media magazine in May last year defamed her by suggesting she was a serial liar who “invented fantastic stories in order to make it in Hollywood”.
Wilson claims she lost earnings because roles promised to her were terminated because of the article and a series of online articles, while other roles were not offered to her because of the claims.
“(Ms Wilson) has been gravely injured in her feelings, credit and reputation, has been humiliated and embarrassed and has suffered loss and damage,” the writ says.
Wilson says the articles were run over three consecutive days which coincided with the release of Pitch Perfect 2, in which she starred, to ensure the sensational claims would attract maximum attention.
The Woman’s Day article claimed Wilson had lied about her age, claiming to be 29, when in fact she was born in 1979, and about her name, using the fake name “Rebel Wilson” when her real name is Melanie Elizabeth Bownds.
The article further claimed Wilson had lied about her background.
Wilson seeks damages and injunctions preventing the articles from continuing to be published.
