How to get a free $15 voucher for your local Lion pub or club

Local pubs and clubs are shouting punters a free drink, as the industry marks a year since Australia was thrown into lockdown turmoil.

It is a year since Melbourne went into lockdown and as businesses continue to recover, National Local Day has launched in an effort to encourage Australians to support their local pub or club.

Despite office workers returning to the CBD, inner city bars and pubs are still not getting anything close to pre-COVID crowds, prompting calls for community support.

“We’re located in the heart of the CBD, so the pandemic had a direct impact on us,” Jenni Grady, publican of Mitre Tavern, said.

“We were starting to get a few more customers in the Tavern as people returned to the city, but as soon as the five day lockdown hit, we were back to square one. Since opening again, we continue to be very quiet.”

Not only a city favourite, the Mitre Tavern is also a historical icon, having been erected in 1868 and operated as a tavern ever since.

“It’s familiar for people and that’s what people like, even if you haven’t been here for 20 years, it all still looks the same,” said Ms Grady.

To support the struggling hospitality industry, Lion has launched National Local Day, which falls on Tuesday 23 March, the official day Australia went into lockdown. To mark the occasion, the beer giant is offering $15 vouchers to patrons to spend at local Lion pubs and clubs.

“What’s great about a campaign like National Local Day is that it also serves as a reminder for Australians that many businesses, particularly within the hospitality industry, are still struggling,” Ms Grady said.

“We all need the continued support of customers because without them, we simply do not have a business. I think a day like this also helps communities, families and friends to come together once again as this past year has been just as hard on individuals.”
