A goose struck by a motorist died “peacefully with pats and kisses” from a pet rescue group which fear it was deliberately mowed down.
Eyewitnesses claim a white HiLux ute deliberately drove into the sitting goose next to Gooseponds Park, Mackay on Wednesday night.
A driver behind — who did not wish to be named — claimed the HiLux collision sprayed feathers across the road at around 6.10pm.
“There were no brake lights and it was sitting in the middle of the road, probably just walking across the road,” the eyewitness said.
“There were other cars parked on the other side of the road who had already stopped for it.”
Taylah Jayne of Mackay Pet Rescue attended the scene straight after to collect the injured goose and deliver her to another longtime volunteer, Robin Morgan.
“We’re very lucky to have her,” Ms Jayne said.
Ms Morgan, who often takes injured ducks home to rehabilitate them, looked after the goose all night until she passed away at around 1am this morning.
“She died peacefully with pats and kisses,” she said.
Mackay Pet and Rescue who were in contact with Ms Morgan throughout the night say the goose died from severe internal injuries.
Ms Jane was heading home from an overnight shift, and rehoming a homeless dog when she arrived at the scene.
She’s now totally and utterly exhausted.
“I volunteer probably over 50 hours a week in our community caring for animals and it’s so disheartening that something so deliberate can cause harm to an animal.
“It’s just so heartbreaking in our community when we try so hard to do what we do,” she said.
Onlookers could not identify the driver and police were not called to the scene.
