A man allegedly caught on camera driving on the wrong side of the road outside a busy Gold Coast high school has fronted court.

Police allege Zachary Vincent Edwards was behind the wheel of an Isuzu D-Max filmed only narrowly missing another car after crossing the median strip and driving through a roundabout in the opposite direction to traffic on Wednesday, August 21.

The alleged incident was reported to have occurred at about 3.20pm outside Helensvale State High School, with the footage showing orange lights flashing on a school zone sign as the ute went past.

The person who posted the footage to social media slammed the alleged antics as “absolutely unacceptable” at the time, saying they had been on their way to pick up their child.

“Whoever this complete tool is needs taking permanently off our roads,” the social poster wrote.

“If I’d have been I reckon a second quicker he’d have completely taken me out doing something so bloody stupid.”

Mr Edwards was later tracked down and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

A police spokeswoman said at the time that the Isuzu D-Max was impounded for 90 days after the alleged incident.

Mr Edwards appeared in Southport Magistrates Court for the first time on Friday, where his case was adjourned to October 10 to allow case conferencing to occur.

He remains on bail.

The 36-year-old Loganholme man did not answer questions about his case outside the courthouse, walking quickly away from reporters.
