A rubbish truck was forced to dump its load after the waste inside it burst into flames outside a Gold Coast school on Sunday morning.
Fire crews were called to the scene near Aquinas College on Edmund Rice Dr at Southport, just after 10.30am on Sunday, a Queensland Fire Department spokesman said.
A rubbish truck had been forced to tip its load onto the roadway after it burst into flames, the spokesman said.
A resident in the area, Dean McNicol, said he was worried the school was on fire after he saw plumes of white smoke.
Mr McNicol said the incident was very concerning, given how close it was to the school.
“It was a very pungent smell,” he said.
He said his biggest concern was about the smoke, which was blowing straight to the school from the road.
A QFD spokesman said Edmund Rice Dr was still cordoned off at 11.39am as crews worked to make the scene safe.
Gold Coast city council has been called to help clean up the mess.
It comes exactly a month after another rubbish truck’s load burst into flames on Pacific Pde at Bilinga on January 2.
