A Gold Coast cenotaph has been targeted by “disrespectful” children on e-bikes who have left deep skid and tyre marks, less than three weeks out from Anzac Day.
On Tuesday afternoon, Rotary Club of Coomera Valley member Warren Edwards was “disappointed” to find damage left by kids on e-bikes near the cenotaph in Tallowwood Park.
Mr Edwards said the youths had snuck through the construction fences left by Transport and Main Roads (TMR) who have been completing the relocation of the cenotaph from its old location.
“I was doing a works progress inspection with the TMR representative when I noticed motorbike wheel tracks in the newly laid turf around the Cenotaph,” he said.
“Soon after a number of boys on motorised bikes rode over the area.
“At the time there were up to five boys on four bikes riding around the whole park.
“I am told by locals that this is not the first time this has happened and that it is a regular occurrence.”
Mr Edwards said TMR and Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) had been working around the clock to ensure the cenotaph would be ready in time for April 25.
“The riding of motorised bikes on this area and around the park has left deep wheel ruts that will need to be repaired to avoid danger to those walking in the area generally and specifically the up to 3000 community members who will attend the Anzac Day service,” he said.
“The works have been delayed by recent weather events and the TMR team, Rotary Club of Coomera Valley and the GCCC have been working hard to ensure that the work is completed in time for this year’s march and service.
“With a clear run and no more vandalism we will be ready.”
Mr Edwards said he reported the incident to Coomera police.
A Gold Coast police spokesperson confirmed they had received a call regarding the damage caused by the e-bikes.
“Police in response will increase patrols in the area and proactively monitor the situation.”
Residents including Angie Skelly said she had noticed a group of kids “harassing people in the neighbourhood”.
“Riding their bikes all over the park and causing chaos since last year,” she said.
“How many times does the community have to ask for help.
“The worst thing is, these kids will not respect it (the cenotaph) at all, at any time of the year.”
The Coomera Valley Anzac Day march will start at 8am near Highland Reserve School Hall.
