High-profile underworld figure Ibrahem Hamze has been arrested on the Gold Coast as part of the ongoing police crackdown on Sydney’s underworld war.

Hamze, 29, was arrested by Queensland Police on Monday afternoon in relation to an ongoing investigation by the NSW Police Criminal Groups Squad into the bloody feud between the Hamzy and Alameddine crime clans.

In a statement, NSW Police remained tight-lipped about the high-profile criminal’s arrest.

“For operational reasons we are not in a position to comment,” a spokesperson said.

Hamze has long been a known target for rival criminal organisations, with police regularly warning him about bounties on his head.

But so far, he has managed to survive multiple attempts on his life.

Police believe last January a would-be assassin intended to kill Hamze, but instead gunned down an innocent man who looked similar and drove a similar car.

In a second attempt last August, two masked gunmen were intercepted by police on their way to try and kill Hamze at a North Sydney address.

Police sources said he is well aware of the danger he is in and has even gone as far as to thank officers for their efforts.

“He has admitted if it wasn’t for us he wouldn’t still be alive,” one source said.

Just three weeks ago his cousin Ghassan Amoun was murdered in broad daylight in South Wentworthville.

That execution-style shooting, which followed the similar assassinations of other high-ranking underworld relatives Bilal Hamzy and Mejid Hazmy, left Hamze as the only major target left.
