A childcare centre will be bulldozed to make room for a much-needed facility with triple the capacity if a Tweed man’s 20-year “dream” is realised.
Tweed Heads Kindy Care on Kennedy Dr, Tweed Heads West is in line to be demolished if owner of three decades Tony Wrobel gets the go ahead from Tweed Shire Council.
He plans to build a new $1.3 million centre with space for dozens more kids.
Mr Wrobel said he has been wanting to upgrade the daycare centre for years – and even sketched out plans in 2003.
“It’s just been a dream of mine,” he said.
Mr Wrobel said he finally resolved to get the project moving during the Covid pandemic.
The current centre has room for 25 kids. The new centre would have capacity for 80 children aged between 0-5.
A new playground would be built for the kids, along with outdoor play areas.
A large portion of new enrolments will be within walking distance of the site, town planner Lisa McKay said.
“The proposed development will provide … an essential service to meet the day to day needs of residents within the immediate and surrounding area,” she said.
Currently Mr Wrobel employs six staff, but he said he is expecting to hire up to 24 staff to meet the demand for new enrolments.
The new childcare centre would be open 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.
