Excitement is building for a long-awaited Southport shopping centre, with the precinct’s entertainment hub set to open next week.

In March, the Bulletin reported stage one of the $500m Queen Street Village site was set to be finished by late May or early June, subject to weather.

Once complete, the integrated development will include new retail, dining, entertainment, residential, childcare, commercial, hotel, health and aged-care facilities as well as a new cinema complex.

The precinct at the old Southport hospital site will connect directly into the Nerang St Light Rail station and be supported by an enhanced new signalled crossing at Queen St.

Revealed: When delayed Southport shopping centre will open - March 31

A pub, burger restaurant and a childcare centre are among 27 retailers confirmed for a long-awaited new Southport shopping centre, it can be revealed.

Developers of the $500m Queen Street Village precinct at the old Southport hospital site said stage one of the project would be finished by late May or early June, subject to weather.

Property Solutions managing director David Blanck said Covid, labour and material shortages and rain had delayed the initial completion date of mid-February.

External road works on Queen St, the construction of drive-through restaurants and tenants’ fitout are still under way.

Division 6 Councillor Brooke Patterson said she understood the project was one of many across the city that had been affected by recent severe weather.

“Considerable progress has already been made on stage one, which is an exciting development for our CBD, and we look forward to it opening soon,” she said.

Once complete, the integrated development is set to include new retail, dining, entertainment, residential, childcare, commercial, hotel, health and aged-care facilities as well as a new cinema complex.
