A man has been sentenced for assaulting two former partners, including strangling one for making noises in her sleep.
Jack Barry Chalkley, 21, pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court on Thursday, June 26 to a string of domestic violence related charges including assault occasioning bodily harm, and strangulation.
The court heard Chalkley told a former partner he had broken up with his girlfriend and invited the 18-year-old woman to attend his Fairfield property on September 20, 2022.
Upon her arrival, Chalkley took her phone and transferred $50 to himself from her bank account.
The woman armed herself with a hammer but Chalkley took it from her and followed her into the bedroom.
When the woman opened the door, she saw Chalkley’s then partner standing on the bed, the court heard.
Chalkley’s girlfriend allegedly punched the woman and Chalkley used the hammer to strangle the woman.
At one point, Chalkley pushed the woman to the corner of the room and told her his plan was to knock her out and keep her there.
Chalkley and his girlfriend berated the woman before letting her go to the kitchen, the court heard.
Chalkley continued to berate the woman, punched her in the face, backed her up against a wall and strangled her.
He told her if she went to the police, he would kill her family.
Chalkley was also before the court for another set of charges from August 10, 2023.
The court heard he picked up another partner from her home and drove to a caravan he was staying in on a Southport property.
This woman was not involved in the September 2022 offences.
The court heard the pair both used meth and had an argument before the woman went to sleep.
Around 10pm, the woman was woken by Chalkley, who grabbed her by the hair and dragged her around the caravan while complaining about her making noises in her sleep.
He punched her, put her in a headlock, put a hunting knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.
When she tried to escape, Chalkley strangled the woman until she lost consciousness.
Upon regaining consciousness, he strangled her again.
The woman was able to escape and eventually call for help from a service station.
She was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with neck abrasions and head bruising.
Chalkley was on bail at the time of this offence.
Defence barrister Gary Churchill, instructed by Gatenby Criminal Law, told the court his client had an appalling upbringing, a history of drug use and suffered from antisocial personality disorder.
The court heard Chalkley had served time alongside his own father while in custody.
Mr Churchill said Chalkley is expecting to be a dad and his impending family might do him a world of good so he doesn’t repeat the mistakes of his own father.
He said his client had “done it tough” in custody after distancing himself from a criminal gang and had been stabbed.
Chalkley was remanded in custody from August 11 2023 before being granted bail in November, 2024.
He returned back to custody on April 7, 2025 for unrelated offences.
Judge Dzenita Balić said Chalkley needed immediate professional help upon release to address mental health issues.
“I am hopeful that with your knowledge now that you are going to be a father, that it will motivate you from this type of life, this type of tendency towards anger,” she said.
Chalkley was sentenced to five years and six months imprisonment with the 462 days in pre-sentence custody declared as time served.
His parole eligibility date was set for September 24, 2025.
