POLICE are investigating a blaze in the kitchen of a unit, which has left a man critically injured and resulted in the hasty evacuation of a Gold Coast apartment block.

The fire was contained to the kitchen of the unit and was extinguished by about 12.15am.

Firefighters conducted atmospheric monitoring before leaving about 1.20am.

All eight units in the block had to be evacuated, a Gold Coast police spokeswoman said.

She said the fire caused “substantial damage” to the unit and a 45-year-old man was carried from the residence “possibly suffering smoke inhalation”.

But Queensland Ambulance paramedics, including Critical Care and High Acuity Response Unit, took the man to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, a statement read.

A 20-year-old man who also lived in the unit was also taken to the hospital in a stable condition suffering from smoke inhalation.

Police believe the fire was “non-suspicious”, but investigations were ongoing on Monday morning.

The blaze in the dunes was “well involved”, according to a QFES spokeswoman.

It only took firefighters five minutes or so to get the fire under control and they left the area about 4.50am.

A towing company was called to remove the charred vehicle from the beach.

Queensland Police officers were investigating the fire later on Friday morning.

The car has not been reported stolen, but police were making “follow-up inquiries” to find out more about the vehicle and the fire.

Meanwhile, firefighters were also called to a blaze inside a garage at Sailfish Cove Mermaid Waters about 10.10pm and a screen door which had caught fire at Miami about 8.45pm on Thursday.

Two firefighting crews were sent to extinguish the garage fire on Cottesloe Dr, which was described by a QFES spokeswoman as fairly minor.

The screen door fire on Mountain View Ave at Miami was extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.

An occupant of the residence managed to put out the fire themselves.

Queensland Police were also called and will be contacted for any more information.
