Traffic was diverted from a major road after a fire ripped through a tyre store at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast on Monday night.
Residents reported hearing two huge booms from the West Burleigh Rd Goodyear at 5.50pm with thick plumes of black smoke visible from surrounding suburbs.
Police made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act about 7.30pm.
An exclusion zone was established while emergency services responded, including Burleigh Street to the north across to West Burleigh Road to West Street, Taliban Street and across to Dunlin Drive up to Christine Avenue.
Residents were urged to avoid the area.
One resident said they saw the fire from their balcony while another said he didn’t believe anyone was hurt.
“He (a staff member) was sitting out the front and looking very distraught. I asked, ‘Is everyone alright?’ He said, ‘Yeah, there’s only two of us working back late’.
“He seemed a bit traumatised to be honest.”
Another woman added: “I was literally at the dog park, and I was like f--- something’s going on, and we ran for it and then the siren went off.”
At least 16 Queensland Fire Department vehicles attended.
By 10pm the enormous fire was largely contained, but a dozen crews were still on scene attempting to fully extinguish the blaze.
Investigations continue to investigate the potential cause of the fire.
