A man has been charged after fire destroyed a hotel room, causing havoc and a huge damage bill at the Surfers Paradise building.

Emergency services were called to the incident in a hotel on the Gold Coast Highway at around 7.30pm on Thursday.

A Gold Coast police spokeswoman said they found a small fire on the seventh floor.

The spokeswoman said the blaze caused more than $100,000 in damages as water sprinklers set off by the smoke flooded units on the fifth, sixth and seventh floors.

Officers arrested a 43-year-old man at the scene and charged him with five counts of wilful damage and one count of endangering property by fire.

He is due to face Southport Magistrates Court today.
