‘Clean up after yourself’: Mayor Tom Tate’s rocky solution to locals sliding down hills

Mayor Tom Tate had a stoney response for locals leaving behind boogie boards and cardboard - and a wrecked hill - after a mud-sliding session. Read what he had to say here.

Queenslanders furious at the state of local hill following viral mudslide

Mayor Tom Tate has a stony response for locals sliding down muddy hills on the Gold Coast during the wild wet weather from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Locals took to sliding down a muddy North Burleigh Hill for some recreational fun - making it even worse - during the recent rainy weather that has ravaged the Gold Coast.

But as the weather cleared, the site has been left a mess with the boogie boards and sheets of cardboard residents used to slide down the hill left behind.

Mr Tate said it was disappointing.

“You can have fun but you’ve got to clean up after yourself,” he said.

“The disappointing part is after they’ve done all the sliding, they’ve left debris, cardboard and left it there bare.”

Mr Tate didn’t resort to mud slinging the dirty act but did have a potential solution to the problem.

“It’s things like that especially things at Burleigh Hill that instead of having a straight hill, I’m going to put some rock gardens in there,” he said.

“So try slide over those rocks.”

“It’s nice to be clean and have good manners and we’ll put some flowers and rocks to really brighten up everyone’s sunshine.”

Local woman Kellie Watson shared footage of the mud coated debris left at the hill on Instagram.

“The remains of North Burleigh Hill. I can say all those that slid down it will have diarrhoea for weeks,” she captioned the video on Instagram.

“It absolutely stunk like a sewer. Super disappointing to see all the boards left everywhere.”
