A Gold Coast surfer allegedly stabbed by a stranger in a Burleigh Heads public toilet has revealed the moment he was brutally attacked, saying it was “the most terrifying moment of my life.”

In an interview with Nine News Gold Coast, Mr Wilson said he thought he “was a goner”, as he was punched and slashed with a fishing knife multiple times by his alleged attacker, Kieran James Alderton, 31.

Alderton has since been charged by police with attempted murder.

The horrific attack took place in the Burleigh Pavilion public bathrooms at about 5:40am on Monday.

“I just kept screaming out for help at the top of my lungs,” Mr Wilson told Nine News.

Mr Wilson said a council cleaner came to his rescue and saved his life.

He now says he wants to “recover and chill” after the attack.

A keen surfer, Mr Wilson’s social media pages are filled with pictures of him at the beach with his board and having celebrations with friends.

Alderton, who is understood to have no fixed residential address, ran from the scene of the alleged attack after being confronted by members of the public, according to police.

He was located on Twenty Third Ave at Palm Beach about 6.10am, where he was taken into custody and a knife was seized.

Superintendent Geoff Sheldon told the ABC the alleged attacker followed the Surfers man from Broadbeach on the same tram and bus to Burleigh.

“The victim’s in his wetsuit carrying his surfboard and he just noticed this bloke on the tram and bus paying him undue attention,” he said.

“He was a little bit suspicious of him and when he got off the bus at Burleigh the bloke was following him.

“So he’s gone into the toilets and tried to basically lock himself in a cubicle just until this bloke went past.”

Superintendent Sheldon said police would allege Alderton kicked the door in, started punching Wilson and slashed him with a knife.

“This could have been really a death in the waiting if it wasn’t for the tremendous effort of a council cleaner and some members of the public, who jumped in and this bloke ran away.”

Alderton was charged with one count of attempted murder.

In Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday the matter was adjourned to May 31.

Alderton did not appear in court for the mention and no application for bail was made.

Mr Wilson suffered cuts to his head and hands and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but non-life-threatening condition.

He has since been released from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
