A crop of Gold Coast Bulletin’s very own journalists have been recognised as some of the state’s best, nominated for one of the industry’s most sought-after awards.

A CROP of Gold Coast Bulletin’s very own journalists have been recognised as some of the state’s best, nominated for one of the industry’s most sought-after awards.
Senior reporter Emily Toxward, Chief court reporter Lea Emery and Director of digital and strategy Wayne Watson were announced as 2021 Queensland Clarion Award Finalists on Wednesday.
Ms Toxward, recognised for her investigation into the silicosis crisis killing young stonemasons, said it was a privilege to be recognised among such other incredible talents.
“The issue of young Queensland stonemasons dying from silicosis because they’re not protected at work continues to be an issue,” she said. “I got into journalism to make a difference and it’s an honour to be able to tell people’s stories.”

Domestic violence campaigner Ms Emery shared similar sentiments upon learning of her nomination for extensive coverage on the issue crippling the city: “Domestic violence is a constant and horrific problem on the Gold Coast,” she said.
“It was a privilege to be able to tell the stories of these women and show the human face of the issue.”
Director of digital and strategy Mr Watson, known for his witty headlines, was nominated for zingers: “Nice day for shite wedding; Angels fix shih tzu sandwich; Stop smoking the Tweed Gladys.”
Winners will be announced at the Clarion Awards cocktail function on Saturday October 9 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
