Three arrested after assault on Surfers Paradise tourists

Two more men have been arrested after a pair of tourists were assaulted in a ‘sickening’ act of violence at Surfers Paradise.

19-year-olds Bailey Phillip Weaver and Joshua Glenn Taylor are the latest two people to be arrested in relation to the alleged assault of two tourists at Surfers Paradise in the early hours of Monday morning.

A third man, Bodhi Jace Willis, 20, was arrested on Monday.

Both Taylor and Weaver have been charged with one count of enter premises with intent and two counts of robbery armed/in company/wounded/used personal violence.

The pair, who appeared separately in the Southport Magistrates Court dock, both applied for bail on Thursday.

It’s alleged two tourists were walking back to their holiday accommodation at the Moroccan Resort at Surfers Paradise when the pair were followed by a group of men not known to them and chased into the lobby around 2am on Monday

The court heard the two victims were followed into a hallway, and were trapped with nowhere to go.

The two tourists were allegedly bashed and had their phones stolen before the group ran off.

The court heard one of the victims suffered seven fractures across his face and will require an appointment with a surgeon.

A video taken by Weaver allegedly for Snapchat was played in court depicting a group running through a lobby, and beating two people on the ground.

Prosecutor Casey Wray opposed bail for Taylor, citing the risk to the community and the risk of reoffending.

The legal aid duty lawyer told the court Weaver did co-operate with police and the footage played in court was provided by him.

She mentioned allegations that the group was at a club trying to fight people but said Weaver denied being at the club and was not with the group at that point in time.

The court heard Weaver had no criminal history but have received cautions for minor offences in 2022 and 2023 when he was a juvenile.

At Taylor’s court appearance, his lawyer Michael Gatenby from Gatenby Criminal Lawyers, referred to differences in the evidence provided in the witness statement and the objection to bail.

He said his client would be not guilty on the robbery offences.

Mr Gatenby said Taylor did enter premises but said it was “a very long bow” to draw that this level of violence was contemplated by all the parties involved.

He said at worst, his client pulled a person by the hoodie and was present for some horrible acts.

He referred to the footage and witness statement, stating the main protagonist appears to be the man with the Gucci hat on his belt.

Mr Gatenby said his client, who was wearing a hoodie in the footage, didn’t throw any punches at all.

Ms Wray said Taylor was shown grabbing a phone forcefully from one of the victims and the footage shown in court was just one angle of this offending.

Mr Gatenby said Taylor was the person in a hoodie shown in the footage.

The court heard Taylor had another court matter in the Southport Children’s Court on July 2.

Magistrate Pamela Dowse said she was absolutely horrified at what she saw.

“Just beyond belief, I cannot believe that young people think that they can do this,” she said. “This is so sickening.”

She admitted Weaver had co-operated to a moderate degree with authorities and granted him bail.

He must reside at an address in Worongary and not be absent from the home between 6pm and 6am with the exception to attend his shelf stocking job.

Taylor was also granted bail.

He must reside with his mother in Labrador and not be absent from her home between 6pm to 6am unless in her company.

Both Taylor and Weaver are not to contact the complainants, or each other or other co-accused.

The third co-accused, Wilis, did not make an appearance or an application for bail when his matter appeared in court on Monday.
