15-year-old charged after allegedly attacking an off-duty officer on Gold Coast tram

An off-duty police officer has allegedly been punched several times by a 15-year-old girl after being surrounded by a group of teens on a Gold Coast tram.

An off-duty police officer has allegedly been punched several times by a 15-year-old girl while on a tram on his way home from work.

Acting Superintendent Michelle Piket said the alleged incident happened while the 39-year-old Senior Constable was taking the tram home at around 12.30am in Parkwood on Saturday morning.

It is understood the officer saw a 15-year-old girl allegedly being “aggressive” and “abusive” towards a G:Link worker.

“The off-duty officer has identified himself as a police officer and told her to calm down,” Ms Piket said.

“She has then turned and started abusing and being aggressive to him.”

Three male teenagers then allegedly surrounded the off-duty police officer before the 15-year-old girl “swung” and “hit” him five times.
The off-duty officer was left with bruising and scratches.

The G:Link worker attempted to help the officer and at the next stop called for backup.

Several on-duty police officers then arrived and arrested the 15-year-old.

She was charged with serious assault and will appear before Southport Children’s Court this week.

Ms Piket said the three male teenagers including a 16-year-old Slacks Creek boy, a 17-year-old New Beith boy and a 15-year-old Yarrabilba boy were arrested on the tram.

They were taken home by police and the 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old boy were dealth with under the Youth Justice Act.

Further inquiries were being made in relation to the third male alleged offender.

Ms Piket said police were unaware if the three males involved were known to the 15-year-old.

“Violence isn’t acceptable,” she said.

“We do regular patrols and work with the G:Link staff to ensure the safety of the workers and all the members of the public using the service.”

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or may have video to contact them at 131 444.

G:Link have been contacted for comment.
