The Mayor has backed a new tourism campaign aimed at giving the gift of experiences this Christmas, and says there’s plenty of high-flying fun to get amongst this silly season.

MAYOR Tom Tate says it is no flight of fancy that the Gold Coast has some of the best experiences in the world.

And to celebrate giving the gift of experiences as opposed to chucking a pressie in a box this holiday season, he has taken a new tourism campaign between Destination Gold Coast and the Bulletin sky high.

Launching today, the 12 Plays of Christmascampaign showcases a dozen tourism operators who are offering the city’s most immersive experiences.

From dining at one of the Coast’s best new restaurants, unwinding at a bath house; or taking things to the extreme by riding an e-foil, Mr Tate says “you’ll never be bored on the Gold Coast with all of the things to see and do”.

To kick it off, the Mayor donned a bright orange boiler suit and stepped into a giant wind tunnel at Surfers Paradise’s iFLY to try his hand at indoor skydiving.

“Sometimes locals want to go overseas where they think the grass is greener. Well I say there’s plenty of grass here mate,” Mr Tate said.

“I’m all about embracing your own city and the 12 Plays of Christmas campaign showcases some of the best experiences you can share with family and friends these holidays.”

2023 is the year of accessible tourism on the Gold Coast, and Mr Tate said anyone with a disability or accessibility issues would have “no trouble benefiting from everything on offer on the Gold Coast”.

“Our motto is leave no one behind, and it’s our mission to ensure anyone with a disability can enjoy all the things everyone else does, with no restriction. We look after everyone.”

Mr Tate highlighted that anyone with a disability wanting to try indoor skydiving could do so at iFLY, with specialist instructors on hand.

Destination Gold Coast Chair Adrienne Readings said “the experiences on the Gold Coast are part of our DNA”.

“There’s so much to offer, whether it’s a rainy day or a sunny day there is something unique to experience,” Ms Readings said.
