Girl, 7, dies after being hit by falling palm tree in Tiwi, Northern Territory

A falling palm tree has claimed the life of a young girl in a Darwin suburb.

NT Police said a girl, 7, was killed after a palm tree fell on her. A boy, 11, was also injured in the incident.

A young girl has died after she was struck by a falling palm tree in a Darwin garden.

NT Police in a statement said the girl, aged seven, was struck by the tree at an address in Tiwi about 1.55pm on July 19.

She had been playing in the yard at the time, authorities say.

An 11-year-old boy was also struck by the tree, but suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Emergency services including police and St John Ambulance attended.

And while she was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital, the girl was pronounced dead before arrival at the hospital.

The death is not believed to be suspicious, an NT Police spokesperson said.

“Investigations are ongoing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner,” they said.
