AFTER winning 150 games in a row, Newtown & Chilwell was staring down the barrel of a two-game losing streak after trailing Colac by six goals in the third quarter.
But the Eagles were able to rally in the second half, scoring 33 goals to 22 to run out 58-51 winners against ladder-leaders Colac.
Newtown & Chilwell coach Jason Woolley said a pair of changes was able to spark the second-half run.
“It was such gutsy win for our girls, especially trailing by six at one point,” he said.
“Kate Jennings moving into goal defence really gave us a lot of defensive turnovers and brought a lot of intensity.
“Zana Woods also moved out of goals into wing attack because Dani Mather had a bit of a strained calf in centre, so we were forced into that a bit.
“Uneeq Palavi came into goal shooter and was quite dominant there.”
Strong second for South Barwon
An 18-goal-to-nine quarter for South Barwon was the difference in an otherwise tight battle against Bell Park.
The Swans beat the Dragons 56-45 off the back of a 43-goal performance from Ellen Doyle and a best-on-court performance from Maddison McKiernan, which extends their season to 4-1.
Real Giants of the competition
After ending Newtown & Chilwell’s 150-win streak in round 4, St Albans was not able to repeat its heroics against Geelong West, falling to the Giants 61-39.
Young Giant Alahria Smith was one of Geelong West’s best players, while Aleisha McDonald scored 38 goals as the Giants won every quarter in the 22-goal victory.
Shooting dominance for Joeys
A best-on-court performance from Joeys shooter Emma Buwalda was a key contributor for a strong start to the season.
Buwalda netted 33 goals and was named St Joseph’s best player as the side moved to 3-1 after beating Lara 51-35.
Runaway win for St Mary’s
The Saints were too strong for Grovedale, cruising to a 50-goal win on their home court.
Ava Pierce, Tess Campigli and Eliza Brown led the Saints, causing consistent turnovers while Grace Parker was able to convert on her chances, scoring 45 goals for the day.
