Football stars make a name for themselves when they can perform at a high level on a consistent basis for their teams.

In the GFL, there is no shortage of star footballers, with local heroes around the competition strapping up and dominating each week.

Some of the competition’s best players have been recording mammoth stat lines every week this season, and some dating even further back.

Break down all of the most impressive active streaks in the GFL here.

Disposals

St Joseph’s has made a point to look for Jack Buckley coming out of defence this season, and the move has worked with the team-of-the-year candidate enjoying a stellar season. Buckley has the most disposals for the season with 208 (averaging 34.7), as well as the equal-most 30+ disposal games with four (tied with Giant Tanner Lovell and Eagle Matthew Boag) and the equal-most 40+ disposal games with two (tied with Giant David Handley).

But while Buckley has been dominant in 2023, his streak of 20+ disposals only dates back to round 15 last season. Boag has not dropped below the mark since 2021, having recorded 30 touches or more in 12 of his past 23 games. Bell Park star Lachlan Patten continues to rack up disposals for the Dragons, having a streak dating back to 2022, while Seagull Brad Gerrard also has been super consistent the past two seasons.

Goals

South Barwon forward Lachlan Noble missed round 7 with a niggling injury, but he is set to return for the Swans this week to continue his impressive goal streak. Noble has booted goals in each of his five games this season, as well as every game dating back to round 11, 2022. Leopold star Mitch Patten has missed multiple games so far this season, but the dangerous forward has been impressive when he has been on the park.

The Lion has kicked a goal in every game dating back to round 15 against Colac last season, giving him an active streak of 11 games. St Mary’s gun Sam Dobson is currently the competition’s leading goal scorer, having booting 21 majors in six games. There has not been a game he has gone without a goal yet this season. Dobson’s goal streak dates back to round 16 in the Hampden Football League last season when he was playing for Koroit, the one game all season he was kept goalless. Seven of those 10 games he kicked at least three goals. Lara’s Mitch Day has also kicked at least one goal in each of his last 10 games, and he too was kept goalless just once in 2021, a round 13 match against South Barwon. Day has 20 goals from five games this season. A goalless game in round 5 ended a 13-game streak for Swan Matthew Caldow.

Tackles

St Mary’s captain Jack Blood owned an impressive streak of 20 games with multiple tackles, until the midfielder laid just one against St Albans in round 6. His new teammate Dion Johnstone is living up to expectations this season, with the pressure forward laying at least three tackles in every game so far this season. Lara’s Connor Linehan-Cunningham has been a tackling machine since making his way to the Cats at the start of last season, with the midfielder never laying less than two tackles in any of his 24 GFL games.

St Albans captain Jacob Russell also has an active streak of 24 games with multiple tackles, while Leopold skipper Marcus Thompson’s streak is 3 games. Colac’s Kody Spokes has 20 games with at least two tackles, with his round 4 game this season the only game in that streak with less than three. Mathieson Medalist Harry Benson has recorded at least two tackles in 15 straight games, excluding the round 11 match against Newtown & Chilwell where the midfielder lasted less than a minute before suffering a significant facial injury.

Contested Possessions

He has not been sighted since round 3, but injured Newtown & Chilwell midfielder Blake Sutterby is the king of contested football. The Eagle has recorded an astonishing 21 games with at least 10 contested possessions, dating back to the start of the 2022 season.

St Mary’s midfielder Jarryd Garner has an active streak of nine games with 10 or more contested possessions, while Lara’s Connor Linehan-Cunningham has recorded 10 or more in every round this season.
