GEORGIE Gardner has revealed the searing grief she experienced from having a miscarriage while trying for a third child.
“(I) was desperately trying to have number three. Do you know? It really rocked me, absolutely rocked me. Some women I know have miscarriages and are very accepting and say that’s OK, that’s nature taking its course but, my god, it really took me to a very deep and dark place actually,” Gardner said, in a candid interview with website Show and Tell.
Gardner, 49, who has two children to husband Tim Baker — Bronte, nearly nine, and Angus, seven — said that the pain of miscarriage needs to be talked about more openly.
“I don’t think it’s discussed enough, to be honest,” Gardner said.
“It’s like divorce, people say divorce is prevalent, well so what.
It doesn’t lessen the pain. I think there are a lot of women and men walking around feeling a real ache in their heart about losing babies, I really do.”
The presenter revealed her miscarriage occurred at the nine or 10-week mark of her pregnancy and said people often asked how long the pregnancy had lasted, as though that made a difference to the grief. “I know no malice is intended, but people are often ready to dismiss it a bit,” she said.
“I’m sure at 39 weeks of course it would be a lot harder, it would be a lot more harrowing than nine or 10 weeks, which was what I was.
“(But) it was still a life, and still a dream. It’s the possibility ... I wanted it so badly,” she said.
Gardner, who was pictured in Sydney after announcing her departure from the Today show, said she wanted to focus on being more “present” for her children.
