Townsville holds a special place in the heart of Australia’s top female gymnast Georgia Goodwin.
She was in the city on the weekend for the opening of Momentum Gymnastics in Mount Louisa and had no hesitation to be here for the launch.
“My grandparents live here, my dad grew up here so when she (Dianne Stephens) asked me to come up I jumped at the opportunity to meet the North Queensland gymnastics community,” Goodwin said.
Goodwin competed in Birmingham at the 2022 Commonwealth Games winning five medals for Australia including Gold in the Individual All - Around Final.
She now has eight Commonwealth Games career medals, equalling Australia’s best and is also six time Australian National Champion.
Goodwin said she hoped she could inspire the next generation of NQ gymnasts.
“I hope I can inspire them to enjoy gymnastics, move their bodies be healthy. Gymnastics provides so much in life lessons in growth and development and co-ordination that from a young age it is so important so I hope they go in there, have fun and enrol and continue on in the next couple of years.”
She said she started gymnastics not with the goal of going to the Olympics or representing Australia but because she loved it.
“You go into the gym, you do these skills that no-one can really do and you make lifelong friends so that pretty much why I started and why I stayed.
“For me now as an athlete my ‘why’ for doing gymnastics is to try and inspire the next generation.
“Seeing the kids’ faces here in Townsville just glowing and having so much fun in the gym it is hard to explain the feeling I have.”
She said seen some children from North Queensland who had potential to go on and become elite gymnasts.
“I have seen one or two kids who have shown incredible talent here and I am so excited to see them grow and have the opportunity to develop their strength and gymnastics training in a gym like Momentum Gymnastics. I am looking forward to seeing them represent Australia at the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.”
She said she would love to come back to help foster gymnastics in North Queensland.
“If I get the opportunity and I get invited by clubs in far North Queensland, North Queensland I will definitely jump at the opportunity.
“Townsville holds a special place in my heart.”
