Barwon Health staff grooved in Geelong’s mall on Tuesday, raising awareness for the importance of a healthy lifestyle for people living with HIV.
The health service also distributed condoms ahead of World AIDS Day, being held on Thursday.
Barwon Health pharmacist Kate Mackie led a group through a dance-exercise class.
“We wanted to break down stigma and show the community that people with HIV can live a long and happy life, all whilst having a bit of fun,” she said.
This year’s theme for World AIDS Day is “Boldly Positive”, which aims to encourage Australians to educate themselves and others about HIV; take action to reduce the transmission of HIV by promoting prevention strategies; and to ensure that people living with HIV can participate fully in life, free of discrimination.
Barwon South West public health unit director Eugene Athan said people with HIV could now manage the disease by taking medication, living a healthy lifestyle and seeking support.
“These days we have medications and treatment that mean people with HIV can live a relatively normal life,” Professor Athan said.
“Our team at the Barwon South West Public Health Unit and the Barwon Reproductive
and Sexual Health clinic can support people across the region to manage their health and wellbeing.”
