A truck driver has been killed after a truck hit a cow and then a tree on a rural road near Geelong on Saturday morning.

A police spokeswoman said the Caroline Springs driver, 39, struck the cow “veered off the road and crashed into a tree” at about 6.15am on Hendy Main Road at Moriac.

“Emergency crews tried to save him, but sadly the Caroline Springs man died at the scene,” she said.

“Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.”

Forensic police have been at the scene investigating the tragic crash.

The road was closed in both directions on Hendy Main Road, between Larcombes Road and Cape Otway Road, with motorists in the area told to allow extra time.

Cyclists could also be seen being turned around near the crash site.

“We did go out at the request of Ambulance Victoria to assist, involving an injured male driver,” he said.

“The Modeware brigade were on scene within eight minutes and assisted Ambulance Victoria.”

One Moriac resident, who did not want to be named, said it was common to see cows “wander out” in the area.

A deceased animal involved in the crash was located on the side of the road.

“It’s regular that they get out around here,” he said.
