A man remains in hospital a day after he was arrested at Eastern Beach, after a black SUV smashed into a tree following a wild chase across Geelong.

A man remains in hospital a day after he was arrested at Eastern Beach when a black SUV cannoned into a tree following a wild chase across Geelong.

The man and a woman, were arrested at the scene near the corner of Garden St and Eastern Beach Rd just after 1.30pm on Tuesday.

A bloodied man could be seen in handcuffs as he sat beneath a tree while pedestrians strolled through the busy waterfront area.

The man was taken to Geelong hospital, where he remained on Wednesday morning, while the woman was arrested and taken into police custody.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed the 24-year-old woman was later charged with theft of motor vehicle.

She is expected to appear at the Geelong Magistrates Court on August 9.

It’s believed the vehicle, a black Ford Territory, had been involved in a wild police chase through multiple suburbs before it crashed on the hill above the Eastern Beach fountain.

Detectives could be seen removing items from the vehicle and placing them in brown paper bags.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said it’s believed the vehicle was stolen earlier in the day.

“The car was observed by police before it was located crashed into a tree on Eastern Beach Rd just after 1.30pm,” she said.

“The male and female in the car were arrested at the scene.”

The man was later placed on an ambulance trolley and taken to hospital by paramedics with non-life threatening injuries.

Ambulance Victoria and the CFA were also called to the scene.

It follows a number of recent incidents involving alleged stolen vehicles across Geelong.

A four-door sedan was found torched on St Georges Road in Corio on Saturday, while a 29-year-old Melbourne man was killed when his alleged stolen ute collided with a truck on School Road on March 24.
