A Torquay surfboard shaper got the commission of a lifetime when premiership Pie Mason Cox asked him to create a work of art on a board.

For self-proclaimed mad Collingwood supporter Darren “Dicko” Dickson, the opportunity to build a surfboard for premiership player Mason Cox was incredible.

Mr Dickson, owner of Torquay’s Darren Dickson Surf Boards, has been making surfboards for nearly 40 years.

He said he’d surfed nearly every day of his life, started working at a surf shop and was eventually taught how to make a board.

He caught the bug and has been creating boards ever since.

He said between 12-18 months ago he was upstairs in his workshop when a staff member came up and said there was someone downstairs he should meet.

“(Cox) came in to get some waders repaired – he loves his fishing,” Dicko said.

“So I wandered downstairs and there’s Mason Cox standing there.

“He was like ‘can I come up and see what you do?”

Dicko said after showing Cox around his work area, the American born ruckman asked about putting art on the board to display.

A short time later, Cox returned with a photo he wanted to use for a custom board to display in his home.

The piece features an aerial photo of sand art one of Cox’s friends from Melbourne, an Indigenous artist, created at Bells Beach stretched across the seven-foot board.

Dicko, who was “stoked” with how it turned out, said Cox was wrapt when he saw the finished product.

“He was sort of speechless,” Dicko said.

“It was a really cool journey from ‘go’ to ‘woah’.”
