A teenager filmed wielding a machete near a Geelong shopping centre has been charged with weapon offences and is allegedly the son of a police officer.
The incident, captured near the Belmont Village Shopping Centre and circulated online last month, prompted an investigation despite no formal complaints being made.
It can be revealed the father of the 16-year-old alleged offender seen brandishing the huge knife is a western region police officer..
Victoria Police and the man were contacted for comment about the claim following the release of the video but did not respond to direct questions.
Police understand the concerning footage, which shows a boy wearing red sneakers and a hooded jumper attempting to intimidate another with the knife, was filmed sometime in early 2024.
No victim has ever come forward, according to a police statement.
Investigators identified and interviewed a teen on June 18, with checks revealing the machete involved was found on him during a separate arrest in March.
He has been charged over the separate weapons offences and will appear at a children’s court at a later date.
A Victoria police spokesman said any allegations the investigation was not conducted appropriately “are false” following unsubstantiated concerns about the police link.
“The investigation into this matter was conducted professionally by the Geelong Youth Tasking Unit and members from Waurn Ponds Police Station, with oversight by local management,” he said.
The sale of the dangerous blades were outlawed in Victoria in the wake of a spate of vicious and bloody knife crimes.
The ban applies to all machetes, being large broad-bladed cutting knives, both in store and online.
The nation first legislation was brought immediately into effect after a terrifying incident at Northland Shopping Centre in June, in Melbourne’s north.
A drug affected man armed with the weapon also caused the lockdown of a Lara school on May 30.
