The Spirit of Tasmania and GeelongPort have unveiled finalised designs for the new terminal building in Corio Quay, with plans to have the new gateway operational by the end of 2022.
The new building’s design, by Brand Architects, uses angled windows and sunshades, and palette of neutral greys and bronze, to evoke images of the jagged contours of Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain and the waters of Dove Lake.
GeelongPort chief executive Brett Winter welcomed the completion of the design phase of the precinct.
“A lot of thought has gone into the design of the terminal building with inspiration for the building’s design being drawn from the beautiful landscapes that Tasmania is famous for,” Mr Winter said.
“The final design is both striking and functional and it will provide the hundreds of thousands of visitors to Victoria and Tasmania every year, a contemporary, comfortable and streamlined experience as part of their voyage.”
Spirit of Tasmania chief executive Bernard Dwyer said the terminal facilities would include a cafe, dedicated play area for children and spacious lounge areas.
“This building will be a place our staff will be proud to work and our passengers will love to come as they embark on their journey to and from Tasmania,” Mr Dwyer said.
“Our employees will benefit greatly from the new office facilities, crew accommodation and staff amenities that have been purpose built to meet our requirements for now and in the future.”
Construction of Spirit of Tasmania’s passenger and freight terminal precinct is due to begin later this year, with the precinct earmarked to open next year.
