A major intersection on the Surf Coast has shut as council crews begin improvement works.
The intersection at Coombes and Messmate roads shut this week, as the construction of a roundabout began.
The works are expected to take six to eight weeks according to Surf Coast Shire, with the intersection closed throughout construction in order to complete the project as quick as possible.
The road closure will see some locals forced to drive an extra 4.5km to get from A to B.
Surf Coast councillor Adrian Schonfelder said it was “great to see this final part of the Coombes Rd upgrade start”.
“Thank you to the community for everyone’s continued patience and co-operation as we
complete these important road safety improvement,” Mr Schonfelder said.
“We have noticed a significant drop in non-local traffic using Coombes Rd.
“We appreciate drivers using alternative routes while these important works are underway.”
Those living along Coombes Rd will still be able to access their homes, with affected property owners receiving correspondence from council outlining how access will be maintained throughout the process.
Coombes Rd will be open for local traffic only, with all through traffic encouraged to use Anglesea Rd, Surf Coast Highway or Grossmans Rd instead.
The instillation of the roundabout is the final stage of a four stage plan to improve the road, announced in October last year.
Stage one through four included tree removal, drainage, public lighting and concrete and asphalt paving, with Coombes Rd being widened and resurfaced from Surf Coast Highway to Ghazeepore Rd.
The works also include an added sealed shoulder along the road for cyclists.
Works began initially on January 13.
