Primary School celebrates reconciliation week on Barwon Heads bridge

A Primary School on the Bellarine formed an Aboriginal flag across the Barwon Heads bridge in support of this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme “bridging now to next”.

A primary school on the Bellarine has put on a spectacular display to mark National Reconciliation Week (NRW), forming an Aboriginal flag across the Barwon Heads bridge in support of this year’s theme “bridging now to next”.

More than 400 Barwon Heads Primary School students made an impressive sight from above when they gathered on the town's bridge on Wednesday holding bright red, yellow and black pieces of paper.

School principal Robin Bennetts said the school felt it was an important way to engage the whole school community, students and parents alike, in NRW.

“We had invited our school community and the wider community,” he said, “and about 50 per cent of parents came along.”

He said the teachers were also very proud of the students for not only their participation in the event but also their engagement in learning activities in the classroom throughout the week.

Indigenous student Myah Tadmin, who is in year six at the school, said she had been explaining the smoking ceremony to her friends on Wednesday.

“As a first nations person it felt good to walk to the bridge and do the smoking ceremony,” she said.

“It makes me feel welcome.”

It comes as the school celebrates 150 years.
