Premmie baby Tyson Moxon ready to start school

Tyson Moxon weighed less than 2kg when he was born, but at five years old he’s celebrated big milestones, and is ready for his next one – starting school.

Tyson Moxon weighed less than 2kg when he was born, but at five years old he’s celebrated big milestones, and is ready for his next one – starting school.

Five-year-old Tyson was born at 36 weeks, weighing just 1.9kg.

Mum Lena Moxon said he’d celebrated major milestones in his short life so far, and was very excited for his next one.

Tyson will be starting school at Bell Post Hill’s Rollins Primary School, and Ms Moxon said he was really excited, and curious.

“There’s so many things that he has never experienced before, because he hasn’t gone to ‘big school’,” she said.

“He’s pretty proud to be ready, and feeling confident about making new friends and learning new things.”

Ms Moxon said on the top of the list of things he was excited to do at school was science.

She said Tyson was a very “hands-on” boy so science was perfect for him.

“He really loves anything that’s about taking things apart, putting things together, how things work, experimenting,” Ms Moxon said.

“I think he’s mostly excited for playtime at lunch time.”

Ms Moxon said Tyson was also excited to pack his own lunch box.

She said he was looking forward to the independence and having “authority over himself”.

Ms Moxon said she and husband Steve felt “overwhelming pride” at how far Tyson has come.

As for the next 13 years of schooling and beyond, she said they hoped he remained open and curious.

“I hope he knows that he gets to change and evolve and grow and shift,” Ms Moxon said.

“He doesn’t have to decide who he is ahead of time, he gets to just enjoy the journey of finding out.”
