Police and ambulance rush to Wyndham Resort Torquay, man flown to hospital after fight

A man who was arrested following a fight in the foyer of a Torquay hotel on Sunday morning, that led to another man being airlifted to hospital, has been interviewed by police.

A man who was arrested following a fight in the foyer of a Torquay hotel on Sunday morning has been released pending further inquiries.

A police spokeswoman said on Monday that the 52-year-old from New South Wales was interviewed and later released.

A 65-year-old Malvern East man who sustained critical injuries was transported to Royal Melbourne Hospital via an air ambulance.

The fight, which occurred at Wyndham Resort in Torquay, stunned onlookers and saw emergency services descend on the scene.

It is unclear what sparked the fight.

The Wyndham is a large resort on the corner of Darian Rd and The Esplanade, opposite Fishermans Beach that was busy with holiday-makers who flocked to the town for the Christmas and New Year break.

EARLIER: A man has been flown to hospital and another has been arrested after a fight erupted in the foyer of a popular Surf Coast resort on Sunday.

Police and ambulance officers rushed to the scene at the Wyndham in Torquay just after 11am.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed a physical altercation took place between a group of people in the foyer of the resort on The Esplanade.

“A 65-year-old Malvern East sustained critical injuries before being flown to hospital,” she said.

“A 52-year-old NSW man was arrested at the scene and is expected to be interviewed by police.”

The Malvern East man suffered upper-body injuries and was transported to the nearby Quay Reserve on Horseshoe Bend Rd, where an air ambulance landed before flying him to a Melbourne hospital.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said he was in a serious but stable condition.

Emergency services remained on the scene at the Wyndham on Sunday afternoon with paramedics and several police vehicles parked at the entrance to the resort on The Esplanade.

A police crime scene team arrived shortly afterwards.

A representative from the resort said they could not comment on the incident.

The Wyndham is a large resort on the corner of Darian Rd and The Esplanade.

Sunday’s drama unfolded just across the road from popular Fishermans Beach. The beach was busy with holiday-makers, picnicking, swimming and sailing, as tourists flocked to the town for the Christmas and New Year break.
